PCTFE is a thermoplastic chlorofluoropolymer with the molecular formula(CF2CCIF)n. It’s chemically related to PTFE, and has the lowest water vapor transmission of any plastic. Other names for PCTFE are Kel-F® (a product from 3M), Neoflon® (a product of Daikin Industries) or Voltalef®(a product from Arkema).
The most outstanding quality of PCTFE is its ability to perform and maintain its elasticity at extremely low temperatures. It also has one of the highest oxygen limit index values. Because it is a highly fluorinated resin, the material is non-flammable and resistant to most corrosive chemicals. It exhibits properties such as near zero moisture absorption and non-wetting. It will not absorb visible light. The material maintains its excellent electrical insulating capacity through thermal cycling and in humid environments.
The high compressive strength of the material combined with its dimensional stability make it a good choice for structural materials. The low outgassing rate and permeability lend themselves to use in instrumentation, lab, aerospace and flight applications.
